Masafer Yatta

Story of Khirbat Al-Masafer – Visitor Experience

As part of the “Story of Khirbat Al-Masafer” project, over 600 Palestinian and international visitors explored Masafer Yatta through guided routes showcasing its archaeological sites, caves, and ancient wells. The tours offered a unique opportunity to hear the stories and daily life of the local residents.

Visitors explored 33 villages and ruins, learning about the farmers and Bedouins’ traditional lifestyles, their connection to the land, and the cultural significance of caves and wells. They discovered historical caves inhabited for centuries, including sections like Al-Rawzana and Al-Khabiya, and listened to elders share memories, local proverbs, and the history behind each site.

The tours highlighted women’s social gatherings at the Taboun (traditional ovens), local storytelling traditions, and the challenges faced by the communities, including the threat of forced displacement and occupation-related pressures. Visitors also met youth researchers trained in oral history and storytelling techniques, contributing to the preservation and documentation of the Palestinian cultural heritage.

The project, implemented by the Al-Shumou’ Cultural Center in partnership with Ahla Palestine Initiative and under the supervision of the Al-Ta’awon Foundation, combines heritage education, community engagement, and cultural preservation, offering visitors a deep, immersive experience of Masafer Yatta’s unique heritage.
